Still Rocking, Still Swaggering, Still the Stones - New York Times
BOSTON, Aug. 21 - Four decades ago, the Rolling Stones made their name by defying propriety. Now they are defying age. They opened their latest tour tonight at Fenway Park, with an audience of 36,000 filling the stands, the outfield and balconies overhanging the stage for the first of two shows here. Mick Jagger is 62, Keith Richards 61, Charlie Watts 64 and Ronnie Wood a spry 58. Age can be cruel to musicians, eroding voices and stamina. But yes, the Stones can still do it.

Open Source - Miles Davis: Early, Late, Real, Yours

We are talking tonight about Miles Davis: Early Miles, Late Miles, Real Miles, Your Miles. With musicians and others who knew him, it would be easy to do an hour just of impressions of Miles rasping voice and lightning wit. Charlie Davidson of the Andover Shop in Cambridge, who tailored Miles and the band’s Ivy League clothes in the and 1960s, is a storehouse of casual Milesiana, like this from Charlie: One day I asked him: Miles, do you really like Frank Sinatra? Do I like him? he said. If he had one tit I marry him!

Michael Brecker needs your help!

Please read this and if you fit the profile, please strongly consider being tested as a posible donor!

FROM: Susan Brecker
SUBJECT: Michael Brecker needs your help.

Dear Family and Friends,

My husband, Michael Brecker, has been diagnosed with MDS
(myelodysplastic syndrome), and its critical that he undergoes a stem
cell transplant. The initial search for a donor (including Michael’s
siblings and children) has not yet resulted in a suitable match.
Michael’s doctors have told us that we need to immediately explore ALL
possible options. This involves getting as many people of a similar
genetic background to be tested.

There are some important points to understand concerning this process:

1. The screening involves a blood test only. It can be done very
quickly either at a marrow donation center or at a LOCAL LAB. The cost
is anywhere from $40 to $75 and your insurance may cover it. (In NYC,
you can call Frazier, at the NY Blood Bank, at 212-570-3441, and make
an appointment for HLA typing. It costs $40.00.) Check with your
local blood bank, or go to http://www.marrow.org to find the donor
center nearest you.

2. Your blood typing information can be posted on the international
registry, if you choose, where it would also be available to others in
need of a transplant. BEING ON THE REGISTRY DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO
DONATE, it just means that you may be ASKED to do so. You can take your
name off the registry at any time.

3. Should you be selected as a potential donor for Michael, please
understand that there have been tremendous advances in bone marrow
transplants and the term itself can be misleading. Bone marrow
donation is no more invasive than giving blood. Stem cells are simply
harvested from your blood and then transplanted to Michael.

4. A match for Michael would be most likely to come from those of Eastern
European Jewish descent. If you or anyone you know are in this category
please make a special effort to immediately get tested. Ultimately, you
would be doing something not just for Michael, but for so many more who
are in a similar situation as my husband.

5. You are now part of our internet-based drive for donor testing. If
everyone who receives this can motivate a bunch of their friends to get
tested, and those friends then forward this email to get their friends
to get tested, we will have rapidly expanded the pool of potential
donors. I urge all of you to get tested AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Any local blood center/Red Cross center can assist in organizing a
drive for Michael, although it would be desirable if you can get a
large group, e.g. a synagogue, to sponsor it. Should you have any
questions about this, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with
Michael’s management office at 212.302.9200 or info@michaelbrecker.com.

Thank you so much for your love and support.

We are so grateful.

Susan xo

Brett Garsed Discussion :: Index

Bio

Brett Garsed was born in rural Victoria, Australia and began playing guitar at age 12 after hearing Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore play “Speed King". After about a month of initial lessons he continued to teach himself and formed a band comprised of his two cousins and a mutual friend and began playing live.

His main influences were Blackmore, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour and Jimi Hendrix. This later expanded to more diverse styles such as Leo Kottke, Rory Gallagher (his main inspiration for slide guitar) and Edward Van Halen.

After playing for about 5 years, Brett decided to take classical guitar lessons for about a year which encouraged him to expand his right-hand finger picking technique, which was already beginning to develop.

Brett’s playing style always revolved around left-hand legato from day one: “I don’t know why I started playing that way, it just seemed so natural.” This eventually led him to the music of Allan Holdsworth, a life-changing experience for most musicians. Hearing Holdsworth introduced him to new sounds and possibilities which in turn exposed him to more fusion oriented artists such as Larry Carlton and Scott Henderson.

In July of 1985, Brett was featured in Guitar Player magazine’s “Spotlight” column, which was devoted to exposing new talent to the rest of the world. This encouraged Brett to give up his job as a licensed plumber and pursue a career as a professional musician, prompting him to send demo tapes to as many record companies and management companies as he could find. “I wasn’t looking for a record deal. I just wanted to get into a good band.” One of the tapes was heard by Ross Fraser of the Wheatley Organization, which led to an audition for a short tour by Australian superstar John Farnham. Farnham, at this time still a member of the Little River Band, was planning a solo album and invited Brett to be a part of the project. The resulting album, Whispering Jack, went on to become the biggest selling album in Australian history, followed by sellout tours of Australia and Europe.

Brett continued to tour and record with John until early 1989 when he was invited to the US to audition for Nelson, a band led by Gunnar and Mathew, sons of the late Ricky Nelson. The audition was a success and the resulting album, After the Rain, went on to sell in excess of 3 million copies and yielded a national #1 ("Love and Affection") as well as 2 top ten follow up singles. In early 1990 Brett also recorded Centrifugal Funk for the Mark Varney label Legato Records, an intense guitar album featuring Frank Gambale and Shawn Lane.

For most of ‘91 Brett toured the US with Nelson, and spent ‘92 recording Quid Pro Quo with Chicago-born guitarist TJ Helmerich after the duo decided to sign to Varney’s label. With Nelson on a seemingly permanent hiatus, Brett and TJ pursued their career promoting Quid Pro Quo, which featured Bobby Rock on drums, Gary Willis on bass and Paul Mirkovich on keys. Greeted with critical acclaim worldwide, the pair recorded the follow up album Exempt in 1993. In ‘94 Brett also filmed an instructional video for REH/Warner titled Rock Fusion which covers, in detail, his unique approach to guitar improvisation.

Brett’s most recent recording projects include the Uncle Moe’s Space Ranch album featuring TJ Helmerich, Gary Willis, Dennis Chambers and Scott Kinsey, the Tapestry album which was released under the band name “Mojo” and features Ric Fierabracci on bass and Kofi Baker, son of the legendary Ginger Baker on drums, and most recently his debut solo album Big Sky with Ric returning for bass and production duties and Toss Panos behind the drums.

Brett is now living in Australia again after 14 years in Los Angeles having just completed the record breaking “Last Time” tour with John Farnham which went for an unprecedented 7 months.

New Discussion Board - Greg Howe Discussion

Greg Howe Discussion :: Index

A place for Greg Howe fans to hang out and discuss Greg’s music, guitar playing, songwriting and live performances.

Greg Howe started playing the guitar at the age of 10 and by his middle teens, after discovering Van Halen, became obsessed with guitar while transforming his confident playing on pentatonic scales on the guitar into a broader understanding of music. By his late teens he had already began playing in clubs with a rock band, which featured his brother Al on lead vocals. Over the course of the next few years Greg continued to hone his guitar skills while playing in rock bands.

In 1988 Shrapnel Recorders owner and infamous guitar connoisseur Mike Varney asked Howe to record an album for his label after hearing a demo that Greg had sent him with the hopes of being featured in Varney’s Spotlight column for Guitar Player magazine. That album, simply entitled “Greg Howe", featured David Lee Roth bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Atma Anur. It instantly caught the attention of the whole guitar community and eventually led to numerous endorsement deals, print advertising and countrywide clinics. After recording two vocal albums with his brother (1990’s “High Gear” and 1991’s “Now Hear This"), the guitarist’s second album(1993’s"Introspection") set the tone for what would eventually become a series of eight fresh forays in to the mosaic of jazz, rock, fusion, funk, and blues. With each subsequent album - 1994’s"Uncertain Terms", 1995’s “Parallax",1996’s “Five", 1998’s “Ascend", and 2000’s “Hypercuity” Howe would make bolder and more satisfying strides into fusion music.

Along the way he would make himself available as a sideman for pop superstars, filling in for guitarist Jennifer Batten in 1996 on Michael Jackson’s History tour through Europe and Asia, touring the U.S. and Europe in 2000 with Enrique Inglesias, making two separate tours of the states in 2001 and 2002 with NSYNC and doing a promotional tour in 2003 with Justin Timberlake. In fact, Howe ultimately ended up leaving the Timberlake tour in 2003 in order to complete work on “Extraction", the already critically acclaimed all-star funk fusion extravaganza, featuring electric bass virtuoso Victor Wooten ( of the flecktones ) and the world class drummer Dennis Chambers (Formerly with Parliament/Funkadelics, John Scofield, the Brecker Bros, and Currently with Santana.

Greg’s busy schedule continues with various projects. Currently, he is in production for a series of online video lessons and is very active with guitar clinics, trade shows, and mini tours around the world.

AXL ThinAmp Review

Just found a review of this cool little amp.

AXL ThinAmp Review

At the recent 2005 NAMM Expo, AXL Musicwas displaying a unique portable amp, the ThinAmp. It’s only 2″ thick, and weighs just five pounds, yet it packs 10 Watts of power, 18 built-in DSP effects, a three-band EQ, and twin speakers. It’s so unique, that it is helping to create a new class of amp.

There are thousands of amps available for musicians to choose from, so it takes something unique to make one stand out. The ThinAmp does just that, by combining a powerful set of effects with one of the most portable amps ever designed.
Comparing it to other amps is difficult. It doesn’t have the body or volume of a full-size amp, or even many portable amps. It’s digital effects are useful, but are not state-of-the-art. But try and fit any other amp in a laptop bag, and you’ll see that the ThinAmp offers its own unique benefits.

The FlipTone Amplifier

Music Thing: The FlipTone Amplifier - Engadget - www.engadget.com.

Musicians are, as I’ve said before, a very traditional breed. Even digital synths often emulate designs that are 40 years old. So it will be interesting to see how acoustic guitar players take to the FlipTone amplifier. The specs are unremarkable - a 25 watt amp with a few digital effects, EQ, various inputs and outputs and laptop-style rechargable batteries for $600. But the form factor is amazing - a A4-sized brushed aluminium briefcase with a flat panel speaker forming the lid. Guitar amps have never looked like this before, although it’s not the first amp to use flat-panel speakers. The ThinAmp is a much cheaper, plastic-cased version which came out last year.

Scott answers your questions round 15 - 5/9/05.

Here’s an excerpt - classic SCOTT! ;-)
——————–
2) I saw a photo…you with John McLaughlin. So I wonder if you ever had any kind of experience with one of the monsters guitarists?(John Scofield or Pat Metheny). Do you get something from that sort of relations?

Scott:
I’ve only met Scofield twice and I’ve never met Metheny, but I’m sure I’d like him because we both have a healthy hatred of Kenny G.

3)Did you have benefits from being great guitar player, I mean having sex with gorgeous girl (like pornstar or strip dancer)

Scott:
Oh yeah, porn stars and Penthouse models love jazz fusion and they’re always waiting to rape me as soon as I get off stage. But I’m 50 now and sometimes I’m too tired.

The Google of Indie Music

This looks interesting!

Indy: The Google of Indie Music

By Jon Newton 4/18/05

Thanks to the Net, Indie music has come of age. All musicians need is an online connection, a bit of initiative, a little imagination and they’re cooking. The trouble is, there’s now so much out there, how do you get to hear to it all?

As we write this, we’re listening to Italy’s Cum Distortion —– thanks to Indy, Freenet creator Ian Clarke’s latest brainchild which, he promises, does for freely available independent music what Google does for the world wide web.

Jon Newton

“Over the past few months, while working on Dijjer in public, we’ve been working on a sister project in private called Indy’, and we’re now ready to release it to the public at-large,” he says.

It uses collaborative filtering, similar to that used by Amazon to recommend books, etc, to prospective buyers, to learn about your musical preferences in relation to other Indy users.

Everything it plays is from online indie music freely available on the web and you can rate each piece at between one and five stars. Using that as feedback, Indy will find and download music that’s keyed to what you like as opposed to what you don’t like : )

“Eventually it becomes like your own personal A&R machine,” says Clarke, going on:

“Artists benefit too, since the user can just click on the name of the mp3 and immediately visit their websites to learn more about them, or perhaps buy their CDs or other merchandise.”

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - From a chenille-slipcovered sofa in the basement of their friend Dave’s mom’s house at the edge of a snow-covered field, Brad and Other Brad, sock-footed pioneers in the latest technology revolution, are recording “Why Fish,” their weekly show.

Clutching a microphone and leaning over a laptop on the coffee table, they praise the beauty of the Red River, now frozen on the edge of town, and plug an upcoming interview with a top-ranked professional walleye fisherman. Then they sign off.

“I’m Brad” says Brad, in real life, Brad Durick, a 29-year-old television advertising salesman.

“And I’m Brad,” says Other Brad, a 44-year-old newspaper writer, Brad Dokken. “Until next week, keep your hook in the water, keep your line tight and keep it fun.”

Their show, mostly ad-libbed, is a podcast, a kind of recording that, thanks to a technology barely six months old, anyone can make on a computer and then post to a Web site, where it can be downloaded to an iPod or any MP3 player to be played at the listener’s leisure.

On an average day, about 100 people download “Why Fish” from its Web site. That is not a huge audience, but two fishermen can dream. Some popular podcasters say they get thousands of downloads a day.

More signs the music business is changing. Grammy winner Maria Schneider won the Jazz album Grammy. And she did it strictly via the Web without selling a single album in a store. Remarkably she not only made a profit, she also secured enough publicity to win the award. “I’m not splitting the profits with the distributor, the record store and the record company. Here’s a few Reviews of Robben Ford with the Greg Allman Band - From the Robben Board

Robben Ford Discussion :: View topic - ( }:-D Come January……..
JohnnyZ is alive and well!

Sorry for taking so long- pretty much spent all afternoon outside yesterday shovelling out both of my vehicles and helping out a few of the older folks in my condo community. By the time I was done, I only had enough left in me to just sink into my livingroom sofa and snooze the night away. I even took today off from work just to relax, and to relive Saturday night…

The best way I can describe this version of Gregg Allman & Friends is, if you’ve ever heard GAF live, or if you’ve only heard Gregg’s solo albums, the many lead guitarists always had that Allman Brothers Band guitar sound, only this time, Robben’s distinctive flair was very evident. Even when Robben played the familiar melodies of Gregg’s songs, if you closed your eyes, you knew it was Robben. And then, when he went off on a solo of his own, which it seemed like he had the freedom to do on many songs, Robben did his thing, which to me means- puts a huge smile on my face. And, not only was I smiling, but Gregg, who’s usually very stoic in his performances, managed to break out a few smiles, as did the band members, and certainly the audience. Speaking of the audience, from the many people I talked to while in line and inside the venue, I would say only 1 of 10 knew who Robben was, and I continually reassured everyone that after tonight, they would not only know who he is, but probably would want to know and hear more of him. I also had to chuckle when I overheard some guy say that he’d better be as good as Gregg’s past guitarists (have another beer, buddy, and enjoy the show ). Bottomline- Robben did not disappoint, and he most certainly gained a whole new bunch of fans…

I saw Eric in Boulder last Wednesday. He played a white one during an encore……..

After years of continual consumer and retailer requests, Fender has announced the long-awaited Eric Johnson Signature Model Stratocaster guitar. The brainchild of Johnson himself, this new model is designed with Eric’s own personal features and preferences, and it is made possible because of his expressed desire to give something back to the collectors, players and, especially, the fans who have supported him throughout his career.

The Eric Johnson Signature Model Fender Stratocaster guitar is built from some of the finest materials available. The light 2-piece alder body is dressed in a very thin nitro cellulous lacquer finish, and the 1-piece quarter-sawn maple neck sports a 12 inch fingerboard radius, 21 highly polished frets, and a soft “V” neck profile.

Additional features include staggered vintage style machine heads, thus eliminating the need for a string tree, custom pickups with countersink screws and wound to Eric’s specifications, and highly contoured body and neck.

Scott Henderson Discussion :: View topic - Scott answers your questions - round 11 - new 1/28/05

Here’s the latest Scott Henderson Q&A! Here’s a quick sample!

hi! I live in Poland. my problem is that I study at Music School (now is the 9th year of my music education) in classic guitar class. Unfortunately they teach there Classic Music Only . I have theory , eartraining (which i think is the most useful ) piano , and all that stuff , but generally in classic music way only. it takes most of my time after highschool (4 days a week), so i wonder about leave it and just practice more jazz/fusion stuff on electric guitar only. (i want to be proffesional musician ) and there are no any Jazz school near me. what do you think ?

Quote:

Yes the best thing to do is give up all your studies in classical music and move to the fast paced, high income world of jazz fusion. Fusion players make even more money than yodelers! If you hate seeing girls in the audience, don’t worry you’ll never have to look at another one again if you become a pro fusion guy, and there’s no better way to work out than moving your own heavy equipment! Sometimes you even get to do it in front of the audience - I especially enjoy being watched while I’m winding cables.

Just kidding (sort of). I love my work and wouldn’t do anything else… but dude! Wouldn’t you rather get paid big bucks to be the guest soloist for those big orchestras, then put your guitar in the case and walk off with some babe wearing a formal?

Wonder What Happened to the Fender Robben Ford Model?

Ever wonder what ever happened to the Fender Robben Ford model. Low and behold it’s back as a Squire Esprit and it’s a pretty awesome guitar. I didn’t get pricing information but this is a quality instrument and has many of the features that Robben Ford developed with the Fender Custom Shop. It’s chambered and has the Robben neck joint - see photos below!

Mad Professor Amps

Made in Sweden by Bjorn Juhl, here’s another amp that caught my attention. It’s a one channel amp coming from the Marshall Plexi pedigree but with an amazing range of tones based on some very unique eq controls. You can change where the mids are boosted via a 5 way toggle which dramatically changes the amp’s voiceing. I couldn’t believe the versatility and variety of tones coming out of a one channel amp. We’re talking clean and overdriven. These are retailing for $6K! One of the best discoveries at the show!

65Amps - One of the amps I really liked at NAMM!

65Amps

Peter Stroud demoed these 65’s for me personally. What a great guy and a terminal tone freak! These are kind of like the Divided By 13 vibe. It does the Marshall Plexi/ Vox AC3o thang. Very chimy and the notes hold togther amazingly well when the amp is pushed into the crunch zones. At high gain levels the amp goes into a kind of Fuzz Face like tone. I thougt this was one of the best new amps at the show! I feel the G.A.S. coming!

NAMM 2005

I had an unbelievable NAMM 2005. Had the pleasure of hanging out with the 3 Scott’s - Scott Lerner, Scott Jones and Scott Henderson.

So here are the music highlights and I will dig in with more detail and into the NAMM gear in future posts over the next few days.

Thursday night it was Guthrie Govan at Tone Merchants.

Friday night it was Dave Weckl Band in Hollywood.

Saturday afternoon was lunch with Scott Henderson.

Saturday night was Mike Landau at the Baked potato.

Sunday Night it was Scott Henderson followed by Joel Hoekstra at Tone Merchants.

Mind-blowing!! I have been reborn! It’s going to take a couple of day for all this to sink in. I will debrief here on my blog over the next few days so stay tuned.

But in the mean time here are all my photos from NAMM unedited.

Here’s an idea I am getting ready to implement on the Online Discussion Network.

How about an Online Discussion Podcast? We could do interviews with ODN artists, amp and guitar builders, and other web gear celebs.

It’s on my todo list! Stay tuned!
