Discover Music - Pandora - KILLER!

Discover Music - Pandora
Ever since we started the Music Genome Project, our friends would ask:
Can you help me discover more music that I’ll like?

Those questions often evolved into great conversations. Each friend told us their favorite artists and songs, explored the music we suggested, gave us feedback, and we in turn made new suggestions. Everybody started joking that we were now their personal DJs.

We created Pandora so that we can have that same kind of conversation with you.

Still Rocking, Still Swaggering, Still the Stones - New York Times
BOSTON, Aug. 21 - Four decades ago, the Rolling Stones made their name by defying propriety. Now they are defying age. They opened their latest tour tonight at Fenway Park, with an audience of 36,000 filling the stands, the outfield and balconies overhanging the stage for the first of two shows here. Mick Jagger is 62, Keith Richards 61, Charlie Watts 64 and Ronnie Wood a spry 58. Age can be cruel to musicians, eroding voices and stamina. But yes, the Stones can still do it.

Open Source - Miles Davis: Early, Late, Real, Yours

We are talking tonight about Miles Davis: Early Miles, Late Miles, Real Miles, Your Miles. With musicians and others who knew him, it would be easy to do an hour just of impressions of Miles rasping voice and lightning wit. Charlie Davidson of the Andover Shop in Cambridge, who tailored Miles and the band’s Ivy League clothes in the and 1960s, is a storehouse of casual Milesiana, like this from Charlie: One day I asked him: Miles, do you really like Frank Sinatra? Do I like him? he said. If he had one tit I marry him!

JamMan Looper/Phrase Sampler Pedal

JamMan Looper/Phrase Sampler Pedal

Almost two decades ago DigiTech developed the PDS 8000 pedal for loop-based audio performance. Now DigiTech takes looping from the original 8-second volatile recording memory of the PDS 8000 straight into the 21st century with the innovative JamMan pedal, which is capable of saving up to 6.5 hours of loops and sample phrases. The JamMan Looper/Phrase Sampler is an effects processor dedicated to loop creation, manipulation, playback and overdubbing, based on the classic Lexicon JamMan rackmount effect. The new JamMan offers tremendous loop capabilities at resolutions up to CD-quality 44.1 kHz in a compact, easy-to-use stompbox format specially tailored to the needs of guitarists and performing musicians.

Just bought one of these to play around with!

Future of Music

music industry, music business, and free music downloads - Future of Music
Chapter One of “Future of Music” book now online

“It is the year 2015 and you wake to a familiar tune playing softly. It gets you out of bed and makes you feel good. As you walk into the bathroom, your Personal Media Minder activates the video display in the mirror, and you watch a bit of personalized news while you get ready for the day. You step into the shower and your personalized music program is ready for you, cued up with a new live version of a track that you downloaded the other day. It is even better than the original recording, so while you dress, you tell your TasteMate program to include the new track in your playlist rotation.

You put on your new eyeglasses, which contain a networked audioheadset, letting tiny earbuds slip into your ears. You switch on the power, and the mix that your friend made for you starts to play. Music pours into your consciousness. It becomes yours.”

Adam Curry gets Sirius - Podcasts - podcasts.engadget.com /

We’ve been huge fans of this concept of podcasting. Adam Curry is leading the charge.

This is very important because Podcasting represents a whole new distribution platform for music promotion and personal content. It’s a continuation of the macro trend of media fragmentation that has been going on for the past 4 decades.

Check this out!!

The Google of Indie Music

This looks interesting!

Indy: The Google of Indie Music

By Jon Newton 4/18/05

Thanks to the Net, Indie music has come of age. All musicians need is an online connection, a bit of initiative, a little imagination and they’re cooking. The trouble is, there’s now so much out there, how do you get to hear to it all?

As we write this, we’re listening to Italy’s Cum Distortion —– thanks to Indy, Freenet creator Ian Clarke’s latest brainchild which, he promises, does for freely available independent music what Google does for the world wide web.

Jon Newton

“Over the past few months, while working on Dijjer in public, we’ve been working on a sister project in private called Indy’, and we’re now ready to release it to the public at-large,” he says.

It uses collaborative filtering, similar to that used by Amazon to recommend books, etc, to prospective buyers, to learn about your musical preferences in relation to other Indy users.

Everything it plays is from online indie music freely available on the web and you can rate each piece at between one and five stars. Using that as feedback, Indy will find and download music that’s keyed to what you like as opposed to what you don’t like : )

“Eventually it becomes like your own personal A&R machine,” says Clarke, going on:

“Artists benefit too, since the user can just click on the name of the mp3 and immediately visit their websites to learn more about them, or perhaps buy their CDs or other merchandise.”

Labels no longer required for profits OR marketing

More signs the music business is changing. Grammy winner Maria Schneider won the Jazz album Grammy. And she did it strictly via the Web without selling a single album in a store. Remarkably she not only made a profit, she also secured enough publicity to win the award. “I’m not splitting the profits with the distributor, the record store and the record company. It’s working so well for me,” said Schneider.

Johnny Hiland joins the Online Discussion Network!!

“I think Johnny Hiland is the most versatile guitar player I’ve ever heard. From Bill Monroe to Eddie Van Halen, he can play it all.” - RICKY SKAGGS

If you tried, you couldn’t make up a story this good: legally blind kid grows up in a trailer home in rural Maine. A guitar prodigy, he tours with the family band starting at age 8, wins local and regional competitions, moves to Nashville, ends up dropping jaws all over town, doing sessions with Ricky Skaggs, Toby Keith, Randy Travis, Janie Fricke and many more, and gets signed by Steve Vai when his manager leaves a demo snippet on Steve’s voicemail box.
