Daved, I have read on the website that Robben uses "tiny" amounts of delay with his TCE 2290, and was wondering if you would be so kind as to publish a couple of Robben's different 2290 settings, along with how he might use each one. As you know, there are four relevant settings on the 2290 that we would need, from left to right: (1) feedback (2) output volumes (3) modulation (4) delay. Thanks, Gill in Houston.

When I got my 2290 earlier this year, I saw the photos below on Dave Henderson's website:

This is an excellent starting point. I terms of delay times, try 168 and also 116.

Gil,
I could probably dig those settings out at some point. I have them buried away at the moment. Be patient. Don't know how soon I can get to it, but I will toss them out sometime in the near future.

Till then, as Jack mentioned, for years Robben has only had 2 settings. His main one is about 1 1/2 repeats with a time interval of 116 for overall use. 168 is the 'solo' delay, you might say. And in the last year or two he's taken to occasionally using 248 (??? I'm spacing at the moment. I may be wrong on the exactness of this last one, but if I'm wrong, it's at least in the ballpark. I'll confirm it once I check my notes, or the rig itself.) as his 'special effect' delay.

Until Daved finds the actual settings, here's what I do to get pretty close:

Start with preset #97 (kind of a slap back)
Feedback should be 15
Output-Delay set at 99
Modulation (trig) speed at .50
Turn off all the buttons on the Pan and Dyn section
Set delay time to 116 (or 168, or 256)

Bingo!!

Here's the trick, however. A big part of this sound is that it must be subtle. I use my 2290 with a GDS 100 W (D*mble clone) and a Rodenberg FlexLoop 3d (D*mbleator clone). The FlexLoop has the ability to be set as a parallel loop which is what I do. I then set the mix to about 45% wet. This seems to work very well. The other thing I found is that the longer the delay times, the lower you want to set the Output delay level. 99 seems good for 116; 90 seems good for 168; and 70-75 seems good for 256.

Daved, the one thing I'm not clear on is the seting in the modulation section. Sometimes I've seen Robben's set at a speed of .50 and sometimes its at .40. I have no clue how the depth is set.

Just for fun, I've attached a photo of my rig (which I put together late last year). Yes, I know whose it looks like and Yes it sounds as good as it looks!!

BTW, if I have not said it before, I'll say it now. The TC 2290 is THE most amazing sounding delay EVER! It cost a ton, but it's worth every penny. I'm really glad I got one last year before they discontinued them. If you get a chance to buy a used one, go for it. You'll be glad you did!

how do set that LXP1?

actually i can see the controls at 12/12 & and it looks like it's on medium 1.
but do you tweak it with a MRC or do you have any good settings to check out with it?

i've been "around the horn" with mine but i'm a glutton for other/more data. :-)

Sorry for the long delay in responding. I no longer have the LXP-1. It died on me a while back. I now use a Demeter RV-1 Real Spring Reverb and I love it. I sounds fantastic (it's not cheap, however).

As an alternative you can also use a TC Nova Delay, it has a 2290ms delay time, strangely enough Smile , and it also has the dynamic delay thing.

PierreL,
I think you haven't seen my question. I especially would like to know what settings you use for "color", "mod level" and "mix level". thanks

Hi Thierry.
I haven't been using the Nova Delay for long, and my goal is no to recreate Robben's settings.
Actually I have used it last week-end on a jazz gig.
I set the color at noon, mod level is quite low (between 8 and 9 o'clock) and mix level is close to noon too. I run it in the loop (in series) of my Fuchs ODS.
And I use the dynamic delay.
The unit sounds great, got lots of compliments on my tone (clean only).
But to be honest I think I'll need to try a few settings before saving some patches, just need some time for that.
Hope it helps.

thank you Pierre, i'm sure it will help.
I have the nova delay for a few weeks and not yet the time to try all of its possibilities.
Do you know if the sound is different wether you connect the delay in serie or with the send/return?
greetings

I need to correct, actually I run it in parallell, not in series. So I haven't tried in series yet, or at the front of the amp.
