Hi
I'm posting here, hoping that Scott or somebody else could be helpful...
I'm trying to solve an issue that is set me crazy.
I need the right chords for the bridge of the Scott Henderson's song Fence Climbing Blues.
I know that's a Bbm blues, but the bridge use an unusual (for my ears) chord progression.
Someone gave me this ones:
Ab7 | C#7 Ab7 | F#7 | Ab7 |
Ab7 | Bbm | F#7 | Ab7 |
but I feel that's no right....
Any other suggestion?
Does anybody have the chords?
Thank you in advance.
Cheers
Fabio

Sorry, I don't remember the changes, but if you write back in late November I have the chart at home - I'm touring now.

I was bored and i could use the challenge so I tried to figure them out ---
this is what I came up with ---I could be way off!
- ---------------------------------(Bass)
|F#-6 |Db- D7 Ab7 Db7 | F#- /F /E /D# | B7#11 / Ab7b9 / |F7b9/C / / /|
|Bb- /C Db / | Eb7#9 / / / |F7#9 / / / |

I think he is tuned down a half step because I think I hear a low E that sounds like an Eb when he plays the Eb7#9 chord.

I'm interested to see how far off I am!

The easier way for Scott to answer that question would be to play a "tutorial version" of the song in Rome (play it slow, make a stop at each chord change and name the chord, maybe have a camera on the headstock and a wide screen, and why not Alan or Travis writing it down on a paperboard).
What about it, Scott?

I hope the tour is doing well (though I was too far from the roadmap). At least I hope you'll come back with a bunch of fun tour stories (like the elderly woman in front of the speakers, that one was really good).

cheers
Kevin

Fence climbing blues is a great song.
My favourite blues playing from Scott is at Israel 1995 - Smelly Old Dog.
That intro specially is some of the best blues playing i have ever heard.

Sorry, that tune is buried in a whole shelf of charts and I don't have time to look for it. The changes are not difficult - your teacher should easily be able to transcribe them for you.

Better response to this situation is sit down and transcribe it himself.
That's how skills are built, not by someone else doing it for him.

I don't remember who said this but i love it,
if you can't hear something then you are probably not ready for it.

Yeah, I agree but I didn't want to be rude to Larue, who just wants to learn the song. That being said, transcription of harmony isn't as difficult as some people make it out to be.

Find the bass note of the chord, then listen for the 3rd to learn if it's minor or major, listen for the 7th to learn if it's major 7 or dominant, listen for the 5th to learn if it's altered or not, and listen for any other notes in the chord to learn if there are extensions. For anyone with even a small amount of music theory, this tune is really easy.

That's all the teaching I'll do for free. I have to say that it would've been easy for me to buy a Weather Report or Steely Dan songbook to satisfy my curiosity about some of my favorite compositions. Instead I transcribed them myself - that's how you learn.

To be clear I had transcribed the chords earlier in the thread for Fabio who is the original poster... I thought he might like to get a definitive version from you Scott as opposed to some random nobody like myself.

I too believe transcribing on your own is a great way of getting your ears better and I am trying to do that more myself. I have found however that if someone is struggling a helping hand can help someone see or hear something they hadn't before.

I agree, that's why I think having a private teacher is the best and most productive way to learn.
