(1) What guitars did you play on the Vital Tech Tones albums? I feel like I hear single coils sometimes but at other times it sounds like a humbucker to me.
I played my main Suhr guitar on the VTT albums - it has ML pickups, which are wired a little bit hotter than traditional single coils. I don't think they sound like humbuckers, but they don't sound like the traditional SRV type single coils either, which is a more scooped sound. I have a few Suhr guitars with his V60LP pickups which are more traditional sounding, but I didn't use those with VTT.
I don't use humbuckers very much when I record, but when I do, I tend to go for the Les Paul over the SG because that guitar just seems to have more color - the SG is a bit flat sounding to me. I've heard Mike Landau play his SG and get amazing tone, but he can get good tone from any guitar.
