Hi folks,

I normally use a set of D'Addario 10-46 strings for standard tuning.

I'd like to retain the same tension, but tune all strings down by two semitones, so that the thickest string is a D.

I was thinking of trying a set of D'Addario 11-52.

Does that sound about right?

Thanks.

Use D'Addario's tension chart at http://www.daddario.com/Resources/JDCDAD/images/tension_chart.pdf to figure it out. You don't mention what type of strings you are using (i.e. nickel wound, stainless etc) but assuming nickel wound for the moment and looking at the high E and low E strings from each set the tension according to their chart is

10 Gauge high E = 16.2
46 Gauge low E = 17.5

vs

11 gauge high D = 15.6
52 gauge low D = 17.4

Pretty close really. A 12-54 set tuned down to D would probably be a little too much tension versus the 10-46 at normal pitch.

as the chart shows, it's going to be close, a tad less tension.

many players go for 11's for Eb tuning to keep the 10 feel. me as well, but 11's @ Eb is noticeably tighter in feel. i played 11's @ D for a while and really liked it -- the guitar responded more 'naturally'.

i also (hesistantly) play a lot with 12-56 @ C (unwound 24 @ G-string) ... i'm almost getting used to it. modern metal is a strange beast ...

Both,

Thanks for your replies. The tension chart is very useful.

11-52 it is!
