Which neck should I get on a Suhr?
I want good tone and stability
I can't stand 59' Les paul type necks - too baseball batish
I like to be able to "get in close" so I have plenty of finger left to move across the fingerboard
A V shape is nice for bending and getting in close , but the edge of the V bothers my thumb when I lay out bigger chords
Suggestions? |

I suggest you try a Med C, .840 - .950, if you have not already done so.

Thanks
I played Tele with that neck and it was pretty close to what I need
I played a Fender custom shop '60 model and that was almost an exact fit.
Does the shape of the neck (curvature of the back) change between the even C and vintage C?
Obviously the V and D shapes are different |

The main difference between the Even and Vintage necks is the taper, not the shape. The Vintage starts out slightly "shallower" at the headstock (i.e., less depth from fingerboard to back), but ends up somewhat deeper as you travel up the neck--it gets thicker, quicker (hmm, that's a rock-n-roll statement if I've ever heard one!)
Personally, I am in love with John's BIG necks. I had a chance to try a Classic with the '56 Big Vee and I decided to buy it on the spot (took me a few weeks to sell some stuff and actually get it, but I couldn't help myself). Incidentally, the V on mine is relatively subtle--I think it's more like a Soft V than a Hard V.
My other two Suhrs have Even C Medium necks, which was my previous favorite neck in the world. My self-aggrandizing rambling aside, that's what I think you should consider--either the Vintage or the Even, depending upon if you like the neck to stay more-or-less even all the way up, or if you like to feel it get chunkier.
Hope that helps--good luck! |
